The Roar Report: Alexander Rose Elementary School Weekly Community Update, featuring a tiger mascot.

✨ Welcome Back, Rose Tigers- Happy 2026!✨

I hope you and your family had a joyful holiday season, a restful winter break, and a happy start to the New Year! As we reflect on the first half of the school year, I want to sincerely thank you for the incredible support, partnership, and positivity you bring to our Rose community. From showing up for school events and celebrations, to supporting learning at home, to sharing your time, energy, and encouragement- you help make Rose such a joyful, welcoming place for our students and staff.

We are so excited to welcome our Tigers back on Tuesday the 6th and begin the second half of the school year together. There is so much to look forward to- engaging learning, meaningful celebrations, and fun community moments that continue to build connection and pride at Rose. Be sure to ask your child if they remember spotting Mrs. Machado, Mr. Derrick, and me as mischievous elves around the school before break… were we up to no good? πŸ˜‰πŸŽ„

Here’s to continuing to grow, celebrate, and shine together in OUR Year to SHINE! 🌟🐯

With love and best wishes for a wonderful 2026, Mrs. Startz

🐯 Every Day Counts: Attendance Updates & January Surprises! 🌟

As we jump back into our routines, we want to take a moment to celebrate the importance of school attendance. Being at school every day doesn't just help our Tigers grow academically- it builds their confidence and keeps our school community strong! School starts at 8:00am daily and attendance is taken right away. Please be on time, and if you're finding that traffic is making things difficult, we suggest that you adjust the time you leave your house. Breakfast is offered each morning starting at 7:30am! Yum!

🎁 January Attendance Incentive: The "Pop-In" Prize!
To celebrate our Tigers being present and ready to learn, Mrs. Machado and I will be "popping" into random classrooms throughout the month of January! 🍿✨ During these surprise morning and afternoon visits, every student who is present in the classroom at that moment will receive a special prize. We are so glad our students are here, and we can’t wait to celebrate them in person!

πŸ€’ Balancing Health and Attendance
We know that the winter season brings sniffles and coughs. While we want our Tigers at school, health always comes first. * If your child is sick: Please keep them home to rest and recover.
  • Need a second opinion? Feel free to check in with our health clerk, Mrs. Hatfield, in the front office if you aren't sure if your child is ready to return.
  • Reporting Absences: Please email Mr. Javi at jgaribay@musd.org or call the office at 408-635-2668.

πŸ“ Independent Study (IS) Policy Reminder
While we encourage families to schedule vacations during school breaks, we know sometimes an extended absence is unavoidable. To support your child's learning, Rose will be strictly following our Independent Study policy:
  • Timeline: IS contracts are for 3–14 missed school days only.
  • Request Early: Contracts must be requested at least 10 school days in advance.
  • Admin Meeting: Families will meet with administration for a brief check-in before the contract is approved.
  • Completion: All work must be fully completed and returned for absences to be excused.
Important Note: IS is not available during the first 10 days of school, before/after breaks of 5+ days, or after April 1st. Students absent for 10+ days without a contract risk losing their classroom placement.

Thank you for your partnership in making attendance a priority. Let’s keep working together to ensure every Tiger has the chance to SHINE this month! 🐯✨

🐯 January Core Value: MOTIVATION 🌟πŸ”₯

This month, our Rose Tigers are learning about Motivation- believing in ourselves, setting goals, and continuing to try even when things feel challenging. We’re focusing on how motivation helps us grow, learn, and reach our full potential.

To help us explore this Core Value, we’re learning about Malala Yousafzai- a courageous student and leader who believed deeply in the power of education. From a young age, Malala was motivated to learn and to stand up for the right of all children, especially girls, to go to school.

Even when learning became difficult and unsafe, Malala did not give up. She stayed focused on what mattered to her and continued working toward her goals with determination, bravery, and hope. Her story reminds us that motivation means pushing forward, even when the path is hard.

β€œWhen the whole world is silent, even one voice becomes powerful.” β€” Malala Yousafzai

✨ Key Message for Students:
Motivation helps us keep going, try again, and believe that our efforts matter.
πŸ’¬ You can continue the conversation at home by asking:
  • What is something you are working hard to learn or improve right now?
  • What helps you stay motivated when something feels challenging?
  • Who encourages you to keep going, and how can you encourage others?

πŸ† Core Value Awards:
Students who model Motivation this month will be celebrated at our ROAR Rally on Friday, January 30. Families of honorees will receive invitations soon. Together, we can support our Tigers as they dream big, work hard, and stay motivated. πŸ’›
